Israel to activate talks with Syria

date: 21 08, 2006

Occupied Jerusalem, Aug. 21 (BNA) USA will give Israel the green light to resume and activate political contacts with Syria, indicated Israeli Political expectations.
Public Security Minister Avi Dichter (Kadima) on Monday said that return of land would be a legitimate move as part of a comprehensive peace deal with Syria that ensures lasting peace. Israeli dailies said that the war in Lebanon changed the stance of US President George Bush and that other Israeli officials want to reach peace agreement with Syria to take Damascus out of Iranian coalition. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni appointed Yaakov Dayan as special "project manager" for possible negotiations with Syria. The sources said that the cost of peace with Syria is the Israeli withdrawal from Golan Heights to avoid any confrontation with them and to take Iran away from Syria.
